Get to know HughTell us about your successes so far?I’m proud of my diverse track record of successes from fell races including the lakeland classic Ennerdale this year, Helvellyn Sky Ultra last year, a course record win at the Tour De Helvellyn, mountain marathon and orienteering events, and top 5 finishes in internationally elite ultras including Ultra Trail Snowdonia and Transgrancanaria. However, my proudest achievement was winning the Dragon’s Back in 2023. |
What are you working on? What are your goals for the future?Currently it’s all eyes on the CCC and Grand Trail at Templiers this year as I look for some strong results in some of the most competitive ultra-races in the world. I’ll throw in some fell races when they fit well in the training schedule. |
Why do you run? What do you love about running? It’s a mixture of exploring beautiful places and challenging myself and seeing what I’m capable of. Sometimes more of the former, sometimes more of the latter. . |
Which Scarpa shoe is your favourite?I’m excited to come onboard after really enjoying the Spin Infinities on some long mountain runs and the Spin STs on some shorter ones where good grip key! |
Tell us about your best day running?Impossible to choose a best. At the moment, it feels like every week there’s a new highlight. A friend of mine just set an FKT on a round in the Lake District … that was pretty great! |
What do you do away from your sport?Away from running, I work for a charity supporting people facing barriers to employment into work. I also became a mountain leader in 2023, and when not training or working I’m doing more and more guided walks and navigation training in the hills. |
Where is your #NoPlacetooFar?My dream places change from week to week, I’m currently loving the classic Lakeland fells, but I had a soft spot for the Rhinogs in Wales last year! |
