In this blog series we are taking a look at some of the best family walks around the UK.

This time we are looking at some of the best walks for families in the Lake District.

The Lakes are known as one of the best destinations in the UK for walking and that is definitely the case for family walks.

Take a look at some of our favourite family walks in the Lake District

Catbells

If you are looking for a Lake District walk which is more than a flat loop around a lake but still family friendly – Cat Bells is perfect. With walks of around 3.5 miles Cat Bells is a family friendly peak with amazing views from the top and a perfect introduction to the Lake District’s peaks for your little explorers!

Alfred Wainwright said of Cat Bells “It is one of the great favourites, a family fell where grandmothers and infants can climb the heights together, a place beloved.” and he knew a thing or two about the hills and mountains of the Lake District.

Most walkers begin their route at Hawse End, where there is a car park, although if you are coming from Keswick you can catch the ferry across the lake for a leisurely start to the walk.

The walk is easy and well signposted, so no navigation skills are needed. simply follow the stone path as it begins to climb, from here the route should be clear, leading on to a wide ridge.

Buttermere Lake Loop

Tucked away in the Northern Lakes - Buttermere tents to be a quieter option even in the super busy periods - so if you are looking for a great family walk away from the crowds then this is a great option (just don't tell anyone...)

Start in the town of Buttermere - where there is a car park and head off for an adventure around the lake.

The 4.5 mile route is mostly flat - so a good one for little legs - taking you round the lake on stony paths

Castlerigg Stone Circle

If your little ones love history the Castlerigg Stone Circle is a great choice for a family walk. You can walk to the Neolithic stone circle from Keswick town centre - so a great option if you are staying in Keswick without a car!

This 4 mile walk not only takes in the stone circle but some amazing views over the fells and returns to Keswick via Spring Wood.

Scout Scar

Want maximum views without having to trapse up a huge hill or walk for hours? Then Scout Scar is a great option.

This route is part of the Lake District National Park's designated Miles without Stiles - which means the route is accessible to all - so perfect if you have little ones in a pushchair!

Rydal Cave

It is always good to have something to aim for when walking with the kids - so tell them you are headed to play in a cave and they will be lacing up their boots!

Rydal Cave is a great place to visit and easily accessible from White Moss Common. The walk takes you along the shores of Rydal water before a short climb up the fell to the cave.

Once there you can explore this man made cave - step on the stepping stones and watch out for fish swimming in the water!
